Culinary Journey to Marrakech, Morocco
$5,800 US pp** | Oct 7-13, 2018
As you can probably tell, I love to travel just about as much as I love food and wine. I've traveled to almost every continent! There are some places that I've been to once and some places I could go back to again and again. In Thailand, I love the kindness of the people, the food, and the markets. In Peru, I could eat ceviche all day long! But in Morocco, the sights, sounds, smells and tastes mesmerized and enthralled me beyond expectation. Everywhere you look, there's something exotic and sensuous. If you are ready for something magical, join me on this Moroccan adventure!
We’ll begin our journey by settling into a luxurious estate, located in the exclusive Palmeraie district of Marrakech. Jnane Tamsna has been written about in numerous magazines and newspapers as "the ultimate destination for those seeking chic tranquility". With it's well-equipped and spacious kitchen and meticulously maintained an organic garden, this is the perfect place for us to dive into Moroccan cuisine. It's also a fabulous place for us to recharge our batteries after a day of exploring!
Once we are sufficiently fueled up, we'll set out to the medina, or old city center, with its narrow passageways and local shops selling everything from spices and preserved lemons to slippers and hand painted pottery. We'll visit the famous souks and spice markets, where I've found some of my favorite treasures. We'll travel to the foothills of the Atlas Mountain to visit a herb farm and maybe even ride a camel. For those seeking ultimate relaxation - head to the local hammam for traditional Moroccan spa treatments or get a relaxing massage in the comfort of your own room. With so much history and beautiful scenery around us, we’ll make sure to explore it all!
I'm really excited to share this wonderful, enchanting part of the world with you. Get ready for the trip of a lifetime!
** Price based on double occupancy, single supplement applies for solo travelers. Airfare not included. Deposit of $1500.00 per person required to secure a spot.
Marrakech, Morocco Cooking Classes
The cooking school at Jnane Tamsna is well-known by culinary adventure seekers, and during our cooking classes, you will learn how to knead couscous by hand, bake Berber bread and use traditional earthenware casseroles called tagines to make incredible stews on braziers outside over an open fire. And this is just the beginning!
We'll have several hands-on cooking classes taught by both myself and the riad's Moroccan house chef Bahija. The incredible gardens at Janane Tamsna will provide many of the ingredients we will use in our cooking classes. You will learn how to make dishes such as a B'stilla – the classic Moroccan savory pastry – of Fish and Preserved Lemon, Lamb Tagine with Tomatoes and Caramelized Spring Onions, Roasted Pepper, Cucumber and Tomato Salad, Spiced Pears with Oranges and Caramel Sauce and so much more. In the evenings, we'll dine in the candle-lit garden at Jnane Tamsna.
We'll be staying at the beautiful Jnane Tamsna in the palm tree oasis of the Palmeraie area just outside the old rampart walls of the medina in Marrakech. Our gorgeous home for the week is set in the middle of an edible landscape lush with flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Jnane Tamsna is run by Meryanne Loum-Martin and her husband Gary Martin, who moved to Marrakech 20 years ago and have created this luxurious oasis for us to enjoy. Jnane House combines the architecture and layout of the traditional 'ryad' (courtyard house) with the spaciousness of a country home. Jnane Tamsna has received wonderful press since it's opening:
Huffington Post -- "A favorite of celebrities, including Giorgio Armani, Brad Pitt, Donna Karan and David Bowie, you never know who will be at your dining table."
Fortune -- ''In the leafy Palmeraie district just outside the city, you'll discover the oasis of calm that is Jnane Tamsna...''
House & Garden -- ''A new ecological model of development, rooted in and respectful of local traditions and the land upon which it is built.''
The cooking school at Jnane Tamsna has been written up extensively. Check out this feature that appeared in Bon Appétit magazine and another great piece in Forbes.
Morocco Day Trips
We'll travel to the "souks" (markets) that Marrakech is famous for, have a couple of Moroccan wine tastings, and visit historic sites, such as Saadian Tombs, Medersa Ben Youssef, and Maison de la Photographie. Together with our knowledgeable guide, we'll take an excursion to the Atlas Mountains for breathtaking scenery and head to the market town of Tnine Ourika, where we'll learn how to make traditional Berber bread! Afterward, we'll enjoy a picnic in the aromatic garden, Le Jardin Bio-aromatique. We won't need to go far for some of the best Moroccan experiences, such as glorious spa treatments and relaxing by the pool. Want to get an insider's view?
